The Lady Copperhead softball team got off the schneid in a big way on Tuesday, posting their first win of 2024 at an early-season Senior Day marking their final home game of the year. Anaconda locked up the Lady Wardens of Powell County High School with a 14-run fourth inning that put the home team on the winning side of the run rule by the final tally of 19-4.
The game started with Brynn Coughlin striking out the side in the first, albeit with Powell County scoring a run off a wild pitch, but Anaconda took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Jaidyn Holdaway scored on a passed ball and Ryleigh Boyd came home as Coughlin walked with the bases loaded.
The Lady Wardens took back that one-run lead in the top of the second, but in the bottom half Holdaway walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and came home off a grounder from Boyd to knot the score at 3-3.
The Lady Copperheads tacked on two more in the third as Ryleigh Warner and Taryn Coughlin both singled, Jaelyn Zeren walked and both Ali Mari and Boyd were hit by pitch to bring them home.
Powell County got back to within one in the top of the fourth, doing so off a hit batter as well. Then the floodgates opened as Anaconda nearly batted around twice in their half of the inning – and surely would have if not for the 15-run rule as 15 Lady Copperheads came up to the plate before recording their first out in what would be a 14-run inning.
All nine players scored at least one run on the day and all but two had at least one RBI. Brynn Coughlin took the win, giving up a lone earned run in four innings pitched while recording seven strikeouts.
Up next for Anaconda is a trip to Three Forks Friday, April 26 followed by Plains and Thompson Falls on Saturday.
