Grand salami time as McKelvy goes yard at Deer Lodge Saturday

The Lady Copperheads' bats came alive in the opening game of a road doubleheader against Powell County High School on Saturday, April 25 in Deer Lodge as Anaconda crossed the plate nine times in what would be a 9-9 draw with the Lady Wardens. 

Anaconda struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first as Faith Stainer hit a bases-loaded single to center driving in Averie Sandoval and Josie McKelvy. 

The Lady Wardens came back with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Lady Copperheads stretched their lead back out and then some the following inning as McKelvy – also with the bases loaded – belted a grand-slam home run to right that brought not only herself but Maggie Lavelle, Ali Mari and Addie Olson home as Anaconda now led 6-1. 

Powell County would come back again though, first with three runs in their half of the second and four more in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead. They would add one more in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-6 before the Lady Copperheads' bats came alive again in the top of the seventh. Mari led things off with a double, then promptly stole third and home plate both to cut the lead to 2. Olson drew a base on balls, stole second and scored on a triple by Sandoval – who herself stole home to make it a tie game. But that's where the rally would end, and the game with it.

Addie Olson got the start in the circle, pitching all 6 innings, giving up 9 runs (all earned) on 13 hits, striking out 4 batters and walking 2. She also helped her own cause at the plate, walking 3 times from the lead-off spot, scoring twice and stealing 3 bases. 

McKelvy went 1-for-3 – that one being the home run – with 4 RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 walks. Sandoval went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI, 2 runs, 3 steals and a hit by pitch. Jaelyn Zeren went 2-for-4, had 2 SBs and a HBP. Stainer went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and a SB. Ryleigh Boyd had a HBP and a SB. Fallon Freeman went 1-for-3 with a walk and a SB. Lavelle was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a SB. And Mari went 1-for-3 with a walk, 2 runs and 2 SBs. 

Anaconda fell to Powell County in the nightcap, 18-3, and lost both halves of yesterday's doubleheader with Florence, 22-0 and 19-1.

The Lady Copperheads will host St. Ignatius tomorrow – Thursday, April 30 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
