AHS Boys Golf hits the big time with PGA national invite

A successful season continues to reap its dividends for the Anaconda Boys’ Golf team, as the squad learned on Wednesday that they had been invited to participate in the PGA National High School Tournament in Frisco, Texas.
This accomplishment serves as another first for the Copperheads, who are coming off of their first Boys State Golf Championship in school history.
“It was pretty surreal,” said Torney in reference to his team receiving an invite. “Most invitations go out to the teams that play in the fall. When we were first notified about the tournament, we were put on a waiting list, but one team had to drop out and we took their place.”
Torney congratulated the team once again, and he said that a tournament of this caliber will be an event that the five boys – Tanner Cromwell, Jacob Sawyer, Bradley Wolfe, Kohl Wolfe and Aidan Tuss – will remember for the rest of their lives.
“It is very exciting. They have three great golf courses and a great facility, it’s a really big deal for us, and it is great for the outgoing seniors as they get to represent Anaconda one last time in their playing career,” he said. “Our guys having the wherewithal to get invited is really neat because it is such an exclusive tournament. They don’t take just anyone.”
Slated to take place July 17-19, the PGA National High School Tournament is a gathering of only the most elite golf teams in the country, and it will take place at the brand-new PGA Frisco campus, which has been dubbed “The Modern Home of American Golf.”
The Boys Invitational is a three-day, 54-hole stroke play event that will include both team and individual competition. Competition rounds will take place on the PGA Frisco campus – Fields Ranch-East, Fields Ranch-West as well as The Tribute Golf Links. Anaconda will be one of two teams representing Montana, with the other being Class AA Helena Capital High School.
Torney said that fundraising efforts have already been set up to cover the cost of the event and, despite the short time-frame to iron out logistics, he said that he and the team’s supporters will figure out how to get the boys to Frisco.
